Alpha Lipoic Acid
Chemical name (INCI):
Thioctic Acid (Alpha Lipoic Acid)
Free radicals damage the collagen and elastin producing cells, making skin age significantly faster and the first signs of aging can become evident even earlier than they should. Alpha lipoic acid is characterized by its strong antioxidant effect. It helps to protect the skin and to remove damage that has already occurred.
Apart from its antioxidant effect, lipoic acid also has an anti-inflammatory effect, which helps to keep skin young. Externally used alpha lipoic acid is easily absorbed. It enters the skin cells without damaging them.
In a placebo-controlled study which was published by the British Journal of Dermatology, 33 women used a 5% lipoic cream on one side of their face and a placebo cream on the other side of their face. The experiment lasted for 3 months, with the cream being used 2 times a day. After 12 weeks of experimentation, a significant reduction in wrinkles and other signs of aging could be seen on the side of the face where the cream with alpha lipoic acid was used in comparison with the other side, where the placebo cream was used. An additional test done with mice showed the reduction of skin redness after being exposed to the sun. Based on this test, we can officially say that alpha lipoic acid protects the skin from sun damage.
